Fix Honuakaha

The Problem

Senior renters and condo owners have been faced with physical, mental, emotional, and financial difficulties due to deferred maintenance and the failure of the HCDA-controlled board to properly address the severe issues affecting Honuakaha. Senior renters frequently lack hot water, AC units leak, appliances are decades old, and there are leaks from within the walls and ceilings. Some seniors have had recurring mold issues in their apartments for several months, and nothing has been communicated to them as to how it will be fixed.

Condo owners do not always receive required association documents and are frequently flooded due to poor drainage and waterproofing, and we end up having to pay our deductible or out of pocket to cover the damages. The Board does not accept responsibility for any of the issues that are plaguing its residents, and we are subject to retaliation from the property management and the board. Condo owners would like to know what is being done with our maintenance fees and why our reserves have been depleted and why we have unlicensed and unpermitted work being done on the building.

Residents are concerned about the state of Honuakaha and feel that we are at risk of reliving the 2021 Miami condo collapse and feel that our concerns have not been taken seriously. Although we have now gotten elected officials involved, it seems that nothing is actually being done and that our concerns are being brushed under the rug.

The Solution

The State Legislature had previously allotted $3M to fix the leaking roof and flooding, which does not seem to have been enough, as we are still facing the same issues from decades prior. We would like the Board to be transparent about the mounting issues regarding the severely deferred maintenance, lack of finances, and how exactly the $3M was spent.

We are asking the Board to take responsibility for these issues and come up with a detailed plan to address these problems for the health and safety of all the residents, as well as a plan to request money from the Legislature or take out a loan to fix these issues. We would like a new property management company and to change the makeup of the Association to have the Brewery and Commercial/Retail apartments removed from the Association so that HCDA no longer holds a majority of the power on the Board.
